Trail Day–146
Trail Mile–-11.5/1,665.2
Location–The Shanty at Blue Mountain, New Tripoli, Blue Mountain Girl, Proprietor, AT Mile 1,246.5

The bunkhouse at Eckville was full last night, all six bunks occupied. A quiet night, though, everyone was asleep by nine (the Pennsylvania rocks had us all wore out).

I’ve a hard, steady climb first thing today, another thousand-footer up through the rocks and boulders to Dan’s Pulpit and Balanced Rocks. The boulder fields are heaped up worse than any I’ve had to deal with so far. Took me an hour to go a quarter-mile through one of them. I take another nasty fall; just unavoidable. Nice bruise on my right arm, but nothing broken. My trekking poles are both pretty much shot. Have leaned very hard on them the last number of days.

In the afternoon, some mercy, as the trail turn onto an old woods road to follow it a few miles. I end the day right next the Thunderhead Lodge. Redbeard has come to support me and he hikes in a ways to meet me. A short drive down to the Shanty B&B where we’ve a room for tonight. It’s a neat old country farmhouse, owned and operated by Blue Mountain Girl. She joins us for supper back up at the Thunderhead Lodge.

Evening, Blue Mountain Girl entertains us. She has a grand piano–plays and sings some old time favorite Gershwin hits. She’s a vocalist with the Bach Choir in Bethlehem.

Though very rough (and tumble), it was a great hiking day…
