Trail Day–048
Trail Mile–11.8/494.2
Location–Muskrat Creek Shelter, North Carolina, mm81.0
Another great night’s stay at Around the Bend Hostel! Hot shower, clean clothes (Thanks Bear!).
Coffee’s ready at 6:45 this morning, I’m right there. Then, in the hallway–Class of 2021 board to sign. Also,
definitely need to leave a note in Gordon and Lisa’s guest book.
Eight, Bear loads and hauls me back to Dick’s Creek Gap and I’m soon hiking north.
A number of respectable pulls today, first, up and around Little Bald Knob, then Buzzard Knob. Plenty of ups and downs, friendly tread, lovely wildflowers, breathtaking vistas.
Just before one I pass the old broken-down oak and enter North Carolina. Two states down, 13 to go. Getting there folks!
Rain was forecast for today, to be followed by late afternoon thunderstorms. So, I’ve hustled along, reaching Muskrat Creek Shelter early afternoon. Didn’t outhike the rain, but got in before the heavy storms.
Late afternoon/evening, storms have held off. A delightful time spent at Muskrat Creek Shelter (my 4th time through here) with a whole bunch of AT northbounders, including the shiny-faced young folks that passed me (again) yesterday–Skyler, Gavin, Lydia, and Angiolina.
A very rewarding day!
Little by little, one travels far.

Hi Nimblewill! I didn’t notice a stove or pot on your gear list. Did you bring any cooking gear?
