Trail Day–126
Trail Mile–-14.0/1,410.9
Location–Blue Ridge Mountain Road, then to VRBO – George Washington Hollida House, Scrabble Historic District, Shepherd’s Cove, West Virginia, AT Mile 1006.2

The day starts at five; another heaping plate of food prepared by Chris, fried steak & eggs. I’m set!

The trail has dropped down and passes through a rural farming community. From Fiery Road I enter open pasture, first to climb then descend to the John Marshall Highway and -I-66. And so, the din from the highway and interstate traffic continues, accompanied by the shrill noise from the planes approaching Washington DC.

I finished my trek through Shenandoah National Park yesterday, the quiet and solitude of that region being left behind. As I continue north, the trail must work its way around heavily populated areas. As a result, there will be more frequent road crossing, which negatively impacts the solitude all of us have come to enjoy. The quiet will return, but not for quite awhile, not until we are deep into New England.

I’ve taken a number of pictures of the old house Chris rented for tonight. It’s located in the historic district of Scrabble and was built in the early 1840s. It’s been kept up amazingly well. I certainly enjoyed my stay there…

Blest, who can unconcernedly find
Hours, days, and years slide soft away,
In health of body, peace of mind,
Quiet by day.
