Trail Day–155
Trail Mile–-10.8/1,785.2
Location–Longhouse Drive, then to Mosey’s Place Hostel, Port Jervis, NY, AT Mile 1,366.5
Mosey has opened her lovely home to hikers. It’s been a real blessing staying here with her. Barry and I plan on coming back for one more night tomorrow.
A long eighteen-mile day had been planned for today, but I’ve decided against that. It’s just too long. Instead, I’ll be doing a little less than eleven. There are easy sections of trail today for sure, but there’s also the treacherous thousand-foot climb up countless steps to reach the summit of Wawayanda Mountain, which will be slow, methodical going. So, fewer miles today, safer hiking.
In the Vernon Valley the AT passes on the Pochuck Boardwalk, then over Pochuck Creek on a suspension bridge, an enjoyable time. But then comes the climb. Being Saturday, families are out in force enjoying the hiker-perfect day. Dad and mom, kids and dogs, all go flying by me as they scamper up the steps to Wawayanda Mountain. No scamper for me; takes better part of an hour to complete the climb.
In the afternoon and nearing the end of today’s hike, Mosey comes moseying in to greet me–a fun time.
Evening, the Owen family from Alabama, John, Beka, Blaze & Wilder, stop by Mosey’s to see me on their way to New England.
A fine day; a mighty fine day…
For mem’ry has painted this perfect day
With colors that never fade,
And we find at the end of a perfect day
The soul of a friend we’ve made.
