Sunday–October 3, 2021
Trail Day–226
Trail Mile–-8.1/2280.9
Remaining Miles—336.5
Location–Goose Pond Road (428.2), Southbound to Etna Road (436.3), then to Hanover Adventure Tours Hostel, Norwich, Vermont, Kimberly Chambers, Proprietor, MaKensi Kastl, Hostel Mgr.

I’m up at six preparing for an early start. Odie is up ahead of me. He’s got coffee brewed, blueberry pancakes on the grill, with fried eggs and bacon to round it out.

There’s steady drizzle, windshield wiper flapping on the old bus as Odie hauls Kitchen Sink and me back up to Goose Pond Road.

Not starting out the best day for a hike, but we’ll make it work. And work it is as we warm up and loosen up quickly–for the 1,500-foot climb to the summit of Moose Mountain. Compared to the effort required for similar climbs north of here, the ascent of Moose is easy, what with the boulders, slick ledges and roots being mostly replaced by duff and dirt. A welcome change indeed!

The drizzle turns to rain as we ascend South Moose. Ponchos on, we hike it up and over–in the cloud-laden shroud. There are viewsite ledges at both North and South Moose Mountains–but no views today.

Odie is waiting patiently for us at Etna Road, from there to haul us back to the hostel in Norwich.

My dear friend, Barry Riddle, has driven two full days from Alabama (his third time this hike) to support me on through to the end of this incredible adventure. The blessings continue…

Those blessings are sweetest
that are won with prayer and worn with thanks.
