Trail Day–054
Trail Mile–7.9/550.0
Location–Wesser, AT Mile 136.7
Another hot tub of water. Another soothing good time for my tired old bones. Chica stuck a couple of frozen pizzas in the oven, then brought them to me, plus a delectable homemade confection for desert. Just great hosts; another memorable stay with Chica and Sunsets. Thanks dear friends!
Breakfast is served promptly at seven and I’m right there. More great coffee too! After, Chica is interested in an interview for their blog – Watch it here!. It was a fun time.
Rob, co-owner of Outdoor 76, comes for me at nine, to run me back up the winding road to Tellico Gap. Much good conversation on the way–thanks Rob! Chica and Sunsets, they plan on coming to Flagg Mountain when I’m back there again. You and Cory need to do the same, Rob!
The climb from Tellico Gap to Wesser Bald is up and a bunch more up. Once there, another short climb up
the old fire tower stairs gets me above the trees for a breathtaking 360 panorama.
Coming off Wesser Bald the trail drops down a narrow razorback ridge cluttered with rocks and roots. I must concentrate on every foot placement, lest I lose my balance, trip and fall. I can see where the trail goes hundreds of feet below. Very scary.
I’m much relieved when I finally reach Wesser, NOC, and the Nantahala River.
Nathan has reserved a room for us in the motel. He arrives late afternoon. We’ll be hiking out together in the morning, bound for Fontana…
Tis distance lends enchantment to the view,
and robes the mountain in its azure hue.
